In addition to recognizing the Mentor of the Year, this event provides an opportunity for us to say "Thank You"to our Annual Sponsors - Aon, Brown & Riding, Chubb, Lockton, Partners Specialty, and Swett & Crawford - without whom none of our events would be possible! We presented all sponsors with a plaque thanking them for their continued support.
Mentor of the Year Nomination:
The example Ryan Hamm sets at Brown and Riding has had a dynamic role in creating an atmosphere that is conducive to building mentor relationships not only within his team and but also within the company.
Ryan has an open door policy for anyone in the office, whether they want to have a casual conversation or discuss a risk they are working on. His laid back personality makes him very approachable, and having been in this business for so many years, he is extremely knowledgeable. He is always prepared to give an individual his complete attention in order to educate the person to the best of his ability.
What truly separates Ryan from others is that he goes out of his way to further educate not only his team, but also the whole division. One example is a trip he organizes called “The Magic School Bus Trip”. On this trip, Ryan squeezes around seven people into his car and drives around the city. We’ll learn about different construction types, parking types, retrofits and the effects they have on property insurance. He’ll top the trip off with lunch and drinks, and a couple hours later, we’re back in the office feeling a little more refreshed with a little more knowledge.
Ryan is constantly focusing on the personal development of his employees. An example of this is his annual Tommy’s Burger run he does for the office. He decides to take his production assistant, who had been in the industry for around six months. On the burger run, he took the opportunity to educate his assistant on important coverage enhancements and helped him understand why the enhancements are requested.
Ryan has demonstrated extraordinary commitment and effectiveness as a mentor to his team and Brown & Riding. He is constantly providing guidance and constructive criticism for his team; continuously seeking to surpass the goals he sets for himself. He also values the opinions of his team members, seeking to understand them, and is willing to make applicable changes to be more effective. Ryan has established a personal relationship with his team, which makes him much more than just a supportive boss, but also a great friend and role model.
In conclusion, Ryan sets a wonderful example with his work ethics, discipline and professionalism, and is always open to suggestions and feedback. For these reasons, this is why we’d like to nominate Ryan Hamm for the 2014 Mentor of the Year award.
